Hi Everyone,
I need to get a chaperone program off the ground for my adult male offender chaperones. Any ideas on what materials to use that you guys have found useful? It would be of great help, instead of just winging it. Thanks,

We are using a workbook by Matt Farrar, which includes a chaperone component.
In addition, we've added ideas that Docjan presented at last year's Texas CSOTP conference.
You might send her a personal message, to see what she has to offer.

Hello. I tried to post and was not successful, so this may end up being a duplicate. If so, I apologize.
We do offer a chaperon training program, as others do. I would be happy to help with ideas and suggestions. If you want, email me, or you can check our website, seguinfamily.com for some of those ideas.

I would like any ideas available for chaperone training as well. I am doing this as part of treatment, we call it support person training here, but the same idea I think. Thank you

Hello! There is a lot of info to put into a training program. I know it is done differently in different places. Around here, most of the probation departments have a Significant Other contract-type thing that they have partner's sign. They leave the actual training to the providers.
Our program has changed over the years. I used to do an 8 to 10 hour Basic Training. It got to be rather difficult for people to attend both days, so I cut it down and then added some ongoing training, Booster Training sessions. Having only one day leaves us with having to "hit the high notes" only. Not the best, but we try to cover the following: differences in sex offender treatment and traditional therapy practices, progress of treatment, rules and their importance, distorted thinking info, basic cycle info, chaperone info (reasons to chaperone, limitations, etc), and lots of How-To's on how to be safe in various situations. I know I am probably leaving a lot of stuff out, but I just wanted to share with you that we do the basics during that one day.
If you have any specific questions, please ask. It would be neat for us to also share ideas about this important part of treatment.
What all do you cover? Does the offender attend with the chaperone?
Janice

Hi! It's been awhile. If you would like to go over what we have been providing as a Chaperone Program for the last 5-6 years I'd be happy to go over the steps with you. We have also added "Family Reintergration" to the Chaperone Program that has been quite successful if you are interested as well.

In MO. we have providers do a program that goes over the crime, deviant cycle, relapse plan, co-dependency issues, develop a safety plan where the officer, offender, supervisor and therapist sit down and approve the safety plan. Then it is up to the therapist and officer to approve the supervisor. Usually classes are 10 to 12 weeks in length. Jan

Jan - I like that program! I think it is probably more effective to have chaperones attend over several meetings, but we have had little success with that. I now have broken down the Basic Training into an all-day training that covers a lot of what you mentioned (hitting the high notes). Then, we require that they attend some ongoing Booster Training Sessions (6 per year, usually) to get in the application part or deeper focus. It is not great, but it has been somewhat better than we were doing. Our people drive from far away and would usually attend one part or so of the trainings and not attend the remaining part or parts. Janice

I use the Connections workbook for training for chaperones. Then add some adjunct material.
