Am wondering how many of you do formal assessments (i.e. court, probation, Federal Probation) or semi-formal assessments (i.e. attorneys, institutions, perhaps other clinicians/ agencies who refer patients to you) and what you're utilizing for instruments? STABLE/ ACUTE 2007, Static 99-R/ 02-R, P-Graph's, AASI, personality testing?

We do formal assessments on all of our guys in treatment:
Interview, PAI, WASI, WRAT-4, Bender II, Trails, MSI II and AASI.
I also do civil commitment evals, and use the state-mandated PCL-R, MnSOST-R, and Static 99, as well as a records review and an interview.
Recently I've started using the Static 99R, but the state is using the Static 99 with early 2009 or 2008 data.

I work with a program who just began using the PAI with state hospital patients referred for evaluation of sexual behavior disorders/ sexual offending. We replaced the SONAR with it, but I'm not really thrilled with it. It's a blend of static and dynamic factors, even though I know that we're severely limited in working with ANY measures that have been normed on a psychiatric population.

Hi, I do assessments on every guy that I see in txt, plus assessments for the courts, child welfare, lawyers (post conviction). Aside from the usual battery of psychological instruments for Axis I and II, I use the STATIC, SORAG, PCL-R and clinical guides of HCR-20 and SVR-20. Also interview and phallometrics. Depending on intellectual functioning, I will also do WAIS and if necessary, modify what I use in psychometrics.

What are the thoughts of using either the Abel or MSI-II to determine whether an individual is capable of providing the necessary protection of children and keeping them safe from sexual harm?

What are the thoughts of using either the Abel or MSI-II to determine whether an individual is capable of providing the necessary protection of children and keeping them safe from sexual harm? I think either instrument can add useful information, and help to inform your recommendations. But, I would not base my decsision on either instrument only. Certainly, an AASI showing sexual interest in children would raise a big Red Flag, whether the guy has been in treatment or not. At the same time, the lack of sexual interest in children does not necessarily mean the kids are safe around him. That's what we all like, nice Black and White, Yes or No answers ... -PMH

I agree that both can provide useful information, but neither can say definitely what a person will do. I like to use both of these instruments. I think they are puzzle pieces, and the more puzzle pieces we have, the more clear the picture. I also love the polygraph. I have found that assessment to be amazingly important even if it is not turned on! ;D Knowing one is getting ready to walk into a room and be "strapped in" to such a device has caused quite a few to starting singing like a bird. Of course, again, not all of them do this, and it is only a puzzle piece as well.

Janice Sounds like a good reason to use a plethysmograph! -PMH

That could be taken in so many ways... ;D Do you have someone who still does the plethysmograph? the guy who did ours stopped. We have not had anyone take one in years.

There is a treatment provider in Corpus Christi who still uses the P. But I think she has a colleague drive down a couple of times a month from Dallas or Austin to do them for her.
